Fashion Switching ✨

By Mmayen Assam2 min read

It was almost 5pm.

From my desk, I could see traffic beginning to build on Tower Bridge.

Grace, my work bestie, got up and walked towards the office toilets carrying her Longchamp bag like it contained classified No 10 files.

It had been a long day of meetings for both of us.

“Done for the day, Hun?” I asked.

“Gurl, I’m done done. I’m also done with nine to five in case you wondered.” She replied laughing.

Five minutes later, a completely different lady walks out.

Heels. Hoops. Ruby Woo lips. Perfume. Aura.

“Okayyyyy! What’s occurring? Where are you off to tonight? You’re going to scare these guys with your transformation, they’ll think you’re an imposter.” I said, hyping her as usual.

“Mission accomplished then!” Grace said smiling. “I have a date tonight. He must never know I spent the last eight hours, sitting here, looking like someone’s lost auntie in cream trainers that used to be white.”

A colleague looked up and said… “Crikey! Where have YOU come from?”

Grace looked at me and smiled. “She’s been here all day.”

As I escorted her to the lifts, I whispered in her ear… “Who’s going to tell them we’re actual real-life baddies… but we just can’t be arsed for the office.”

She laughed, got in the lift and shouted as the doors closed, “Haters will call it catfishing!”

Never to be caught unfresh…

Yet somehow the barestEST minimum for work.

Maybe fashion-switching deserves its own university module.

Or is it just another form of code-switching?
